This course is designed for WIC personnel and other health care providers who complete nutrition assessments. Awareness of cross-cultural communication allows WIC personnel to create a more rich and enhanced assessment and counseling experiences with clients. The goals of the course are to:

Define cross cultural communication and why it is necessary in practice

Provide examples of effective communication techniques when completing nutrition assessments

Identify appropriate communication strategies when working with clients that have a language difference

Recent events have shown the need to reach everyone in the community, including those outside of the “mainstream”. Must define these groups, locate them and ascertain how best to communicate with them. Some regions have done more on this than others. In wide-spread emergencies public health efforts must be inclusive. The goal is to make sure every member of the community understands the information needed to prepare, cope and recover from health emergencies.

This specialized course is intended for anyone responsible for communicating risk to special populations during an emergency situation. Note: A basic understanding of the principles of risk communication a prerequisite for this course

“Communicate to Make a Difference: Practicing Cross-Cultural Communication” is a collection of case studies that examine the practical application of the “Ten Strategies for Effective Cross-Cultural Communication,” as described in the“Exploring Cross-Cultural Communication” training. One of the essential services of public health is to enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety. “The Bamboo Dragon” begins with the health inspection of an Asian restaurant. Can the stakeholders overcome the barriers to communication that cultural differences have created?

The Arizona Public Health Training Center is proud to offer the online version of our face-to-face course Public Health Essentials In Action.  This multimedia training will provide a dynamic look at the some of the most fundamental aspects of public health from the unique points of view of members of the workforce and of community members as well. Learners will gain a grounded understanding of the Three Core Public Health Functions and the Ten Essential Public Health Services.  Learners are asked to develop an action plan detailing immediate, short term, and long term goals that they will strive towards in building a capacity to better serve their public health community. The goals in the action plan relate to the learner’s role in the delivery of services as they relate to the systems management section of the Public Health essentials continuum.
